About Counslr
What is Counslr?
Counslr partners with organizations of every size to give their people unlimited live texting sessions with licensed counselors. It's there 24/7/365, on demand or scheduled, in a free app for iOS and Android. We're here for the people who need support but don't go looking for it, usually because of cost, hassle or stigma.
Is Counslr therapy?
No. Counslr doesn't provide therapy, clinical counseling or diagnoses. Counselors listen, offer empathy, suggest ways to cope, help you think through options and share resources for everyday things like stress, anxiety, burnout and relationships. They never diagnose or make treatment plans. Counslr works alongside therapy and EAPs. It doesn't replace them.
Who are the counselors?
Licensed mental health professionals only, LMHC, LCSW, LMFT, LCAT, PsyD and LPC. Every counselor is vetted and trained for live support over text. We choose them for empathy and cultural sensitivity, not just credentials.
Is there a hotline I can text just to talk?
Counslr isn't a crisis line, but you can start a live chat with a licensed counselor any time. If you're in immediate danger, call or text 988, or call 911.
Using Counslr
Who can use Counslr?
Anyone whose school, employer or organization partners with Counslr, free to them. If you've been invited, you can also subscribe on your own with Counslr Direct.
Is it free? Do I need insurance?
If your organization partners with us, it's free for you. No insurance, no copays, no claims, no surprise bills.
Are there usage limits?
No. Sessions are unlimited. No caps and nothing out of pocket.
Why text?
You can have a session anywhere without anyone overhearing. You can reread the conversation later. And typing often feels easier than saying it out loud. Some things are still best face to face, but text works well for most.
Does text support really work?
Yes, when it's with trained professionals. 89% of Counslr users had never used the mental health resources already available to them. A peer-reviewed study in JMIR Formative Research found most people used on-demand sessions, and more than 80% of sessions happened between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. Read the study
Isn't something lost over text?
That's why every session is live, with a real licensed counselor. No chatbots, no delayed replies. Counselors are trained to build trust and connection in writing.
Can I pick my counselor?
For your first session, Smart Matching pairs you with an available counselor who fits your needs and preferences. After that, you can schedule with anyone you've talked to before, or start fresh with someone new.
Is it private?
Counslr operates in alignment with HIPAA. The app is encrypted and data is stored using industry-standard protocols. We don't share your information without your consent, except in very specific emergencies. Your organization only sees aggregated numbers, like how many sessions were held or which times are busiest.
How do I start a session?
In the Counslr app, tap Chat Now to connect with a counselor right away, or schedule a session for a specific date and time. Sessions last up to 45 minutes, and your counselor is actively engaged in the conversation the whole time.
What platforms can I use?
Counslr is available on iOS and Android.
Does Counslr offer audio or video sessions?
No. Counslr is entirely text-based.
What is the minimum age to use Counslr?
Users must be at least 10 years old to access the Counslr platform.
Why can't children under 10 use Counslr?
Text-based communication requires a certain level of reading comprehension, typing ability and emotional vocabulary that typically develops around this age. Younger children often benefit more from interactive, play-based or face-to-face support where trained professionals can pick up on non-verbal cues. Working with children under 10 also involves unique considerations around consent and parental involvement that are better addressed through in-person or family-based support.
Why am I having trouble verifying my age in the app?
Counslr partners with PRIVO, an FTC-approved COPPA Safe Harbor, to manage parental consent and age verification. If you're 18 or older, you'll be asked to pick a verification method (such as a driver's license or government ID, the last four digits of your SSN, a small reversible credit card charge, or an age-verified PayPal account). If you're under 18, you can't verify your own age and will go through the parental permission process instead. Tips: use your legal first and last name (no nicknames); if you recently changed your name or moved, try your previous name or address; check for typos or extra spaces; and if one method gives an error, try another. Still stuck? Use the purple chat circle in the app or email hello@counslr.com. Counslr doesn't receive or store your verification details. PRIVO uses them only to verify your age.
Privacy and safety
Why do you ask for my location?
Your general location is used to confirm your jurisdiction. For example, you can't join sessions from outside the United States. Beyond that check, your specific location is only accessed in an emergency.
What counts as an emergency? When would my information be shared?
An emergency is when your counselor believes someone, including you, is in imminent danger. In that case your counselor may contact emergency services or your emergency contact to share the relevant details. That's the only time information is shared without your explicit consent.
Will my school, employer or parents find out I use Counslr?
Not if you don't want them to. We don't share any information with outside parties without your explicit consent, except in limited cases like a life-threatening emergency.
What data do you share with my school or employer?
Only aggregated, anonymized information, like how many people have used the app or which times of day are busiest. Never anything that identifies you or your sessions.
Should I use Counslr if I'm feeling suicidal?
No. If you're feeling suicidal or you're in a life-threatening situation, don't use the Counslr app or website. Call or text 988 for immediate help, or call 911. See hotlines and helplines
For students
Do you share anything with my campus counseling center?
We don't automatically tell campus counseling centers about your Counslr sessions, and we don't ask them about your in-person sessions. If you want information shared, and you give us explicit written permission, we can arrange for it to be shared securely both ways.
